3 Tips When Reading Old Testament Prophets

Reading through the prophetic books in the Old Testament can sometimes feel like staring at an ancient tapestry from the backside. Where are the truths we are to live out? You might ask, “What does this have to do with my life today?” But each verse, each narrative thread, holds importance to knowing God through His Word. We shouldn’t skip any part of the story of God.

However, here are some tips for applying prophetic books in the Old Testament to our lives today.

Follow the Story in the Old Testament.

Dive into the Old Testament narrative and try to grasp the context. If confusion arises, don’t hesitate to seek out resources or commentaries that illuminate the historical and cultural background.

Seek Timeless Truths in the Old Testament.

Amidst the ancient stories and prophecies in the Old Testament are eternal truths. For instance, in the book of Hosea, God emphasizes the value of loyalty and knowledge of Him over mere rituals (Hosea 6:6).

Live out timeless truths from the Old Testament.

As we reflect on the Old Testament verse in Hosea 6:6, “For I delight in loyalty rather than sacrifice, and in the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings,” we realize that God invites us to engage in a relationship with Him, marked by genuine faithfulness and understanding.

      In response, we might pray:

“Lord, help me to be loyal to you today and to walk with you, seeking your truth in your Word and in the world around me.”

And then we might keep our hearts tuned into seeking to live loyally to God throughout the day.

All of God’s Word is Useful

The Bible, while ancient, is eternally alive and relevant. It teaches us about God’s desires for us, our identity, and our mission. Even the prophetic books reveal who God is and HIs plan from eternity past, present, and our eternal future.

Don’t skip out on the whole counsel of God’s Word. Even when it doesn’t always make sense, keep seeking understanding.

His Word is alive and active today.
